History

Kinnitty Castle dates back to 1209; however the area has been the seat of the O’ Carroll Clan dating back to the Celtic Christian period, 5th/9th Century. Indeed a Celtic cross from this period stands on the grounds. The Normans overthrew the O’Carroll’s in the early 12th Century; however the Celtic Irish retrieved the Castle in the 14th Century and lost it again in 1640 to Oliver Cromwell and his forces. During the Norman occupation, they build a monestry for the Augustan order, part of the monestry built in 1209 is now incorporated in the existing castle of today.

The ousting of the O ‘Carroll’s was bloodless, as they were vastly out numbered by Cromwell and his forces ,they opted for the practice of surrender and grant. Under this system, if the Celtic clan surrendered their lands to Cromwell, the would receive less fertile land elsewhere in Ireland or take up residence the New World. The O’ Carroll’s opted for the latter and after a period in London set sail for America.

In America they were granted a vast estate in Maryland, where they became rich due to their expertise as cattle farmers. The grandson of the ousted chieftan, Charles Og O’Carroll went on to become one of the signatories of the American Declaration of Independence and later donated the land the Capitol Hill is built on. They also became founding members of the Democratic Party.
